Papers, 1965-1974.

A collection of ca. 190 official and student circular letters, minutes, transcripts, resolutions, ballots, pamphlets, manifestos and some correspondence, partially labeled confidential, 1965-1974 arranged in chronological order, documents the identity crises this art school experienced in the late sixties and early seventies in connection with changes in its statues and constitution proposed in part by the government in part by the Kunstakademie's director E. Trier, its teaching staff and its students. The collection is especially strong in documenting the conflict between a radical group of students associated with the sculptor Professor Joseph Beuys and his "Deutsche Studentenpartei" (founded in 1967 and mostly represented through manifestos of the Beuys student Johannes Stüttgen) and and the student art movement and anti-academy "Lidl" founded in 1968 by his former student Jörg Immendorf on the one hand and the more conservative professors and students at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf on the other about such issues as teaching methods, admission policies, exams, student involvement in curriculum planning, selection of teachers and the representation of the student body (ASTA and student parliament). The material also chronicles the closing of the Düsseldorfer Academy by the Minister of Culture Johannes Rau on May 7, 1969 and the international furor over the subsequent dismissal of Beuys in 1970.

ca. 190 items.
